The beating death of little Demond Reed has shaken all of Minneapolis but especially a group of North Side parents, who are taking a 10-week course to become better and wiser moms and dads.
"We cannot be afraid to lean on each other for help," Garrett-Akinsanya said. "We are here not just to survive, but to prosper."
Sounds like an excellent program that could also be useful in other communities.
Every community should have this type of program to support current parents, to educate them and to provide them with the skills to raise their children in a difficult social setting. IMO, every pregnant woman and the father of that fetus should be required to take a class such as this BEFORE the baby is born.
I totally agree! Although requiring the class might be difficult to implement. People would likely rebel with this type of government intervention into their lives.
Thank you for your comment!
To me it's just like having to take a driver's ed class before getting a driver's license - only even more important.
I can see the grey area around funding such initiatives publicly, but requiring a government run indoctrination course is going way too far. The drivers license analogy fails because there is a right and wrong way to drive - we make all the rules so knowing them is important and possible. But there isn't a 'right' way to raise a child but many right and wrong ways.
No, but there is a 'right way' to protect a child from harm, in all its various parameters. That should be the focus of a mandatory class.
