Many schools face major 'hidden' problem -- helping homeless students succeed

advertisement

Weekday mornings, a steady stream of buses pulls up on Third Street in downtown Minneapolis. Each inches forward until a paper in the window identifying its route is visible through the gable-shaped arch in front of People Serving People. Up to 70 school buses a day pick up kids at this homeless shelter, located just off Portland Avenue.

Because most kids don't want others knowing their situation, the Minneapolis school district has devised complicated bus schedules to make such shelters the first stop in the morning and the last in the afternoon.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I maybe stretching the bounds a bit putting this in the Caregivers group. But in my view it is a type of care-giving.

As economic situations in this country continue to deteriorate, situations such as described in this article will only increase. Creative solutions will be necessary to help the children who are caught up in situations that they don't understand. The school truly is their only stable environment.

Not be cliche....but...

The children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier.....

Not sure who wrote the song (I know who sang it)...but this always stuck with me..."Sense of Pride" That says a lot.

Great seed!

Thank you Dan, Blitzen and Magisolfire1 for your comments. I knew this wouldn't be seen by as many if I put it in education. That is why I put it in US news. It doesn't look like it did well here either.

I had no idea the the school districts did this. It was a problem I never really considered. I liked the thoughtful way that they handled the busing by picking them up first and letting them off last.

@ magisolfire1 ... I would have to look it up to see who wrote it. But no one can sing it like Whitney!

    The greatest love of all

The line I like is: "No matter what they take from me they can't take away my dignity!"

Thanks for reminding me of this song!
