Build me up...

Build me up...

I tire of the back-biting,

sniping,

tear-everyone-down-who-does-not-agree-with-me-attitude.

what happened to respect?

listen to what I am saying...

don't just wait for me to stop talking so you can continue...

be aware that yours is not the only point of view...

there is more than one side...

each is valid...

listen...

build me up...

don't tear me down...

Hell, yeah, nicely put.
The funny thing is that it takes so much less energy to listen and consider what someone has to say than it does to tear them down and try to convince anyone who will listen that they're an idiot (and I'm chronically lazy, so I care about these things).
You're lovely, Mary. Thank you for putting this out there.

Thank you Celestina,

This was more a reaction to some of what I read in the last few days, but it also brought to mind some conversations I have had with people in the past. It was very apparent that they didn't hear a word I was saying and were only waiting for me to stop speaking so they could make their next point.

Excellent message to get out there. I too find it much easier to listen, whether it be face to face or online in a cyber conversation. Put the egos aside and stop making everything all about "me" for once! Do something for someone else - make others feel important. It's not hard to do.

I am a firm believer in building people up. I know too many people whose way of feeling better about themselves was to rip someone else and tear them down. Not cool at all...

My thanks to everyone who has read this article and has also helped support the other GNW contributions. In doing so you are helping contribute to a more positive Newsvine.

Also a big thank you to everyone who has contributed articles and seeds today. We have an all time high of over 30 submissions. The day is not yet complete so I don't have a final total yet.

Mary-

We are all just members of 'Mary's Minions' and feel lucky to be your friend-your sense of right and wrong should be a beacon to many on here and in your non-virtual life (I would imagine). GNW as far as I'm concerned is the best idea I've seen here on the vine since I started here. I look forward to and also 'rack and stack' articles so I can post them on Wednesday. As the Guiness Beer Commercials used to say, Brilliant.

I'm a day late and a dollar short. Again I apologize. What a wonderful message. And what I have always liked about GNW, is that we get to listen to one another! I am so glad to read that we have been so successful in getting the good news out!

Your a shining light of joy on Newsvine! I will never forget the kindness you gave me when I was a newbie, and wanted to tell my uncle's story. You went far beyond what you had to for me and for that alone, you are the best.

I often wonder if some of the PhD.s here on NV let it go to their head and become arrogant and condescending as a result. Here is a quote to them from one of my favorite philosophers: "An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you do know and what you don't." --- Anatole France

I don't think education makes a difference when it comes to being arrogant and condescending. It occurs in people of all ages, both genders, all income brackets, and from all political parties. And I am not even sure that is what this is all about. Sometimes people just stop listening for what ever reason. They don't see the effect of their actions or even of the consequences when they fail to act.

It is not even just about listening... We all must look around and be more aware. Be open and willing to admit when you are wrong. No one person has all of the answers and there are way too many questions..

I am sorry, I am rambling on here... I kind of had a bad day and have a lot on my mind at the moment.

Thank you for the comment CL1, I love the quote!

Ohhh...I know about bad days! That's ok, and I didn't read it as rambling. I soooooo agree that it is more than just education and comes from all walks of life. How true, we stop listening and just keep trying to be right. Rhetoric!! Yep, lots of questions, too.

Thanks for taking precious time to reply!

Blessed be the peacemakers. The hope and the promise of Newsvine..... it can be built! It can be felt! It can be integrated and embodied! It can be brought to life! Mary, if you lead, those nascent ideas we talked about, that group proposed over on DolceSpiritus's article, will be a lasting testament to the collective intentions and high motivations of today's leading viners, and all who will follow in the years ahead will know that one time, a viner named azsky13 decided to make real the hope and the promise of this great community, and it has made all the difference! Rome wasn't built in a day, but at least wars don't last forever. Getting Smarter will soon take on an altogether qualitively greater and more profound meaning here! That group, your stewardship, it WILL be done, Mary!

Some people just need an outlet to let loose their rants and I would imagine it makes them feel more important than they are in real life.

Why do roses have thorns?

Hey Mic! It's early in the morning so I'll take a chance and try to see what you are getting at. It's to protect them from getting eaten I believe...or manhandled too much.

Are you suggesting that we need to have 'thorns'? Or that by their behavior they are attempting to protect themselves?

While I can see your point. I don't agree. Roses have thorns to protect themselves. We have our brains...which are supposed to be a bit more evolved than thorns...JMHO.

Or am I reading a bit more into this roses statement than intended and you didn't want to discuss it at all! LOL

Mic Hudson

The "rose" is an example of the world around us. It is beautiful to look upon, it's fragrance is wonderful and enticing to the senses (it is something to be desired). Yet if we approach it without appreciation (without understanding), we are easily wounded. The thorns are a defensive mechanism, a form of protection; the rose is telling us in its own way, "I am here for you to admire, but treat me gently and with great care for I am fragile. If you do not I may just bite you!

Reality instructs us that life isn't all rosy and red ~ we are meant to engage in the world around us and that necessarily involves wading through a bit of the bad in order to reach the good.

The "why me(?)" person is forced to accept the wisdom inherent in the entirely appropriate "why not you(?)" response. The ability to reasonably function in the real world requires it (e.g., "A bit of manure is the nutrient to a better harvest!")

Perhaps a better inference would be, "Life isn't meant to be a bed of roses. Even if it were ~ would you want to lie in it?

Without first accepting the requirement of the appropriate accoutrement the emolument is hardly worth its acquistion?

Mic, that is a very beautiful and thought-provoking response. It's all about the appreciation factor?

Unfortunately nature doesn't have all of the answers - the deer eat the roses, thorns and all leaving an ugly demolished mess - no appreciation at all!
